Company Work Vs. Freelance

There are two paths when joining the video production field. One way is working for a company and the other is working for yourself, freelancing. Each have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. Check out this link to contract vs freelance work. Neither option is a clear winner and one may work better for some than others. From this article I hope to inform the reader on the positives and negatives of company work vs freelance.

First we’ll talk about the advantages of working for a company. When working for a company you have all your jobs given to you and never really have to search for clients. Also you will have a team to work with and depend on so all of the work doesn’t rest solely on your shoulders. One of the biggest advantages of working for a company is steady pay rather than getting paid on a per project basis. When working for a company you have one position, and all the paperwork/budget/other tasks are taken care of depending on your position.

Company work also poses some disadvantages too. One disadvantage is that you will have a boss overlooking your work. Another is that your pay is decided, and limited. A third disadvantage is that you do not get the choice of what projects you will accept and work on. The disadvantages may be bearable for some but they do exist.

Freelance advantages are bountiful(10 reasons to freelance). One advantage is that you get to decide the projects you work on. Another is that you solely decide the direction of the projects you work on. Yet another strong positive of freelancing is that pay is not limited. You could be offered a very high paying job and all profits are pocketed by you rather than dispersing it amongst a team. Another positive is that you are your own boss, no one can fire you and no one looks over your shoulder. You can also decide your own hours. As you can see there are quite a few advantages to freelancing.

The disadvantages of freelancing are also quite numerous. One big one is that pay is not steady. You will only get paid when you get a project. You won’t have the budget that companies would to spend on equipment and software. Another disadvantage is that you are solely responsible for everything with no one to help you out. You are responsible for all aspects of each project. Another difficult part of freelance is exposure. The hardest part when starting out is getting your name out there and finding jobs.

As you can see there are definitive advantages and disadvantages for both working in a company and freelancing. While company work may be more steady and safe, there’s not as much room for improvement and pay raises. Freelancing may have some huge advantages such as receiving all the pay and being in charge but its balanced out by the risk of failing on your own and exposure issues. After analyzing the facts, ultimately it is up to you to decide which path works better for you
